A Brief Q&A

  • Is my child too young to start piano?

I recommend that your child be at least 5 years of age before starting. All new students receive one complimentary assessment lesson before enrollment. This assessment is particularly useful for younger kids to ensure that they can pick up basic piano foundations.

  • Do you provide the materials?

I require that all students have copies of the material so they can practice in their own home. I use a range of books, worksheets, and individual pieces. All books are available online or from Tim’s Music Store. If a student is working on a specific piece, I will send a printable PDF.

  • What levels of piano do you teach?

I teach all levels however I specialize in working with beginner and intermediate students.

  • Are you a strict teacher?

I expect diligent practice and I expect mistakes. How else do we learn? Everyone’s musical journey is going to be unique. I want my students to feel comfortable in their learning experience, not scared.

  • What does a typical lesson look like?

All lessons follow the same general format: check in, warm up and technique, song work, theory, and ear training work. It is vital for a well rounded musician to have multiple platforms to practice skills. All students will get a variety of piano instruction during each lesson.

  • Do students have opportunities to perform?

Yes! Students are given two opportunities to perform each year during our Winter and Spring Recitals. All family and friends are welcome to watch!

  • How much should a student practice?

Younger students between the ages of five and 10 should aim for 10-15 minute sessions, 4-5x a week. Older kids, teens, and adults should aim for 20-30 minute sessions 5-6x a week.

  • Do I get to pick my own songs?

I believe that students are often motivated most by music that they feel connected to, so I try to incorporate personal preferences as often as possible. However, it is also important to develop technique and sight reading in a variety of musical genres.

  • Where do lessons take place?

All lessons are held at my studio located in Arden Park. There are currently no options for in house lessons.
